About Open House Essen

Essen is the first German city to join the Open House Worldwide and is hosting its first edition in 2021. Named European Capital of Culture for 2010 and European Green Capital in 2017, it is the tenth-largest city in Germany.

For just one weekend, explore Essen’s city centre and get to know its architectural history and diverse culture, from its 1920s architecture classics and industrial heritage buildings to green spaces and new initiatives adapting existing buildings. See the development of the city and hear the city stories told by its inhabitants in their ateliers, offices and private homes.

Open House Essen offers free access to more than 60 buildings – historical, redeveloped for new purposes, and in the process of change thanks to great people shaping the city’s character. Together with experts and citizens, it invites participants to discuss the history of the city to understand its present and co-create the future. It shows Essen from the roofs, opens doors and windows and goes underground to give a unique experience of getting deep into the living city in all its colours.
