The inaugural Open House Adelaide was presented on the weekend of 19 and 20 May 2012 by History SA. We are delighted that the program featured 46 buildings and two tours – the buildings open range from heritage treasures to the latest in award-winning sustainable architecture.
There couldn’t be a better time to be thinking about the future of the City of Adelaide. Contemporary initiatives in urban planning, design and activation, such as the 5000+ initiative, Splash Adelaide and the Vibrant City program, are beginning to map out possibilities and public involvement is a key element in all of these. By encouraging engagement with contemporary architecture, design and engineering alongside our built heritage, we hope that Open House Adelaide can contribute in a tangible way to this community conversation. We think it can also strengthen a shared sense of place, linking our city’s buildings and streets with people and their stories.
History SA would like to acknowledge the advice and assistance we have received from our colleagues at the Integrated Design Commission, the Universities of Adelaide and South Australia, the Institute of Architects and the National Trust in presenting this inaugural Open House Adelaide.
