Open House Galway

Open House Galway
October 2014

Following the outstanding success of last year’s event, Open House Galway returns in 2012. Over one weekend, Galway buildings of all types and periods opened their doors to allow citizens explore the architecture of their city, with special tours by professionals and enthusiasts, completely for free.  Presented in partnership with the Irish Architecture Foundation, Open House Galway 2012 will feature over 30 buildings of quality design in the city and its environs, including private dwellings, incorporating sustainable materials and innovative design and well as commercial, public and educational buildings.

Curated by a local voluntary committee, the programme includes visits to city landmarks such as the Harbour Master’s Offices and GMIT with tours of contemporary Gaeltacht architecture featuring the Language Commissioners’ Offices and the studios of TG4. Historical gems include architectural tours of Mutton Island Lighthouse while the Marine Institute and the SAP Buildings showcase contemporary design innovations. Cognisant of the current trend towards renovations and house extensions, the programme also features an architecturally designed private house extension in Mincloon.
