About Open House Porto

Porto: a city with a unique identity. Its historical centre was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO and the region has seen the number of visitors from all around the world increase, showing, beyond its obvious charm, a complex, diverse and enticing reality.

Porto has a dramatic expressiveness, emphasized by the relationship of the granite architecture to the city’s topography. It is a grey, wet, rainy city, but able to transform itself, with a brief ray of sunshine, into a beautiful silver texture. It is a romantic city, where urbanity and rurality coexist. It is a city of contrasts that exists as naturally as it resists.

Considering the value of the contemporary architecture from Porto, such as the two Pritzker’s Álvaro Siza Vieira and Eduardo Souto de Moura, the Open House Porto also features historical buildings located in a wider area that embraces Porto, Matosinhos, Vila Nova de Gaia and Maia (2021). From towers, lighthouses, theaters, museums, schools, offices, infrastructure, or private houses, different typologies can be visited on one weekend in July.

Launched in 2015, the Open House Porto is a partnership between Casa da Arquitectura and the City Halls of Porto, Matosinhos, Vila Nova de Gaia and Maia (2021).
