Situated along the Nidelva river and the Trondheimsfjord, Trondheim is Norway’s historic medieval capital and today, a vibrant hub for technology, education, and research. Founded in 997 AD, the city holds a rich architectural legacy—from the iconic Nidaros Cathedral and the traditional wooden wharves along the canal, to the structured grid plan of Midtbyen designed by Johan Caspar von Cicignon after the Great Fire of 1681.

Today, Trondheim is rapidly evolving; balancing its deep-rooted timber heritage with forward-thinking, sustainable design. Joining the Open House Worldwide network in 2026, Open House Trondheim celebrates this dynamic urban landscape by opening the doors to a curated selection of public and private spaces. The program spans sensitively transformed historic landmarks like Tukthuset in the heart of the city, to terrain-adapted private residences tucked into the forested hills of Byåsen.

Open House Trondheim aims to foster a broader public dialogue on how architecture shapes our daily lives. By inviting residents and visitors to step inside spaces normally closed to the public—the festival offers a fresh perspective on Trondheim’s built environment, with the aim to make architecture accessible and spark engaging conversations about the future of our city.
