The “refugee” housing complex at Alexandras avenue in Athens

A virtual tour of one of the oldest social housing complexes in Athens built in 1933-1935 by the architects of the Technical Service of the Ministry of Welfare, Kimon Laskaris and Dimitris Kuriakos, in order to accommodate Asia Minor refugees of the 1920s in Athens. The area of Ampelokipoi, where the housing complex is located is one of the settlements amongst others such as Dourgouti, Asyrmatos or Tavros. With elements of German functionalism, they are an example of Greek modern architecture and one of the largest social housing complexes of the time.

What does a typical bourgeois Athenian residence look like?

Tour typical example of a bourgeoise Athenian residence. It is a building with a 1950s stone-built ground floor and a concrete expansion of 1960. In 2009, it took its present form after the renovation undertaken by the owner and architect M. Petrοula. Particular emphasis was given to the study of the surrounding area and the design of an experimental planted roof.

Architecture for Society: Keynote lecture by the pioneering architect, Kate Macintosh

Join acclaimed Scottish architect Kate Macintosh for a keynote lecture created in partnership with Open City, The London Society, the Museum of Architecture and the Twentieth Century Society. Macintosh will speak about her life’s work, the work of her long-standing collaborator George Finch and the wider context of British housing today. Learn more.
